Field of Fragments
Berlin, Germany
2024
Jeewi Lee, Philip C. Reiner
Description:
Field of Fragments explores sand as both a material and a concept, unveiling its paradoxical nature. Although abundant on Earth, sand has become a scarce resource due to its exploitation for construction and technology, driving environmental degradation and conflict.
The exhibition features sculptures magnifying individual sand grains by 850 times, revealing their unique histories and intricate details. Through advanced scanning and 3D printing, these works highlight sand's role as a foundation for global infrastructures. Accompanying paintings, inspired by coastal landscapes, use collected sand to create monochromatic gradients, reflecting its cultural and ecological significance.
This exhibition invites viewers to rethink sand as more than a material—it's a dynamic symbol of time, memory, and transformation.

Jeewi Lee, Philip C. Reiner
Jeewi Lee (*1987, Seoul) is a South Korean-German artist, based in Berlin. Her work predominantly deals with traces that question our visual perception. The trace bears witness to time while also reflecting its history and own production process. For Jeewi, it exist as residue of past lives, a visual allegory for lived experience, place, memory, and the body. The artist carries out intensive research on materials and their properties by transforming or combining them. This leads to her exploring the poetic context of the individual materials.
